Known as Southern Sugar, singer songwriters Laura Ashworth and Kelley Corwin knew from the moment they started writing together, they had a special kind of musical chemistry. Laura who is originally from Charlotte, NC but now resides in Brevard, NC and Kelley, born and raised in Houston, TX, and now also lives in Brevard, NC have very different backgrounds. However, they have a few things in common… they are both from the south and they are both sweet as “southern sugar”.
While very different stylistically in music, when the combination of Laura’s poetic lyrics and her soulful and folk melodies are stirred in with Kelley’s fun loving and heartfelt stories of timeless circumstances, along with a squeeze of sassy southern country flare, they bring a collection of original songs that will touch every emotion of your heart.
As a result of their songwriting collaboration, their songs have placed in various prestigious songwriting contests including the International Songwriting Contest and Nashville Tennessee Concert Songwriting Contest, which resulted in rave reviews as being hit songwriters. They have also been privileged to have amazing artists cover their songs, which has resulted in air play worldwide including several songs on the radio program Women of Substance in Los Angeles, CA.
Their song Angel in Black, a tribute song about Johnny Cash, was selected to be on the Music for the Troops CD compilation, which was distributed to the troops worldwide. This song has been covered by established artists Leeann Atherton, Joshua Singleton, Erin Ashworth, Blue Mountain Myst and was released in November 2012 by Leigh Glass and the Hazards on their album titled “Something in the Water” which received rave reviews by the Alternate Root Magazine. Their song Global Warming of the Heart covered by Gypzee Heart was selected by the Alternate Root Magazine to be on the Music for Social Change CD compilation, which includes established artists such as Ivan Neville.
They have worked with established producers including Rich Brotherton of the Robert Earl Keen Band in Austin, TX, Chip Martin, Nashville, TN, Joshua Singleton, Asheville, NC and Steep Canyon Ranger Michael Ashworth, Brevard, NC . Do you recognize the name Ashworth… “The apple does not fall far from the tree” as this is Laura’s son.
Their produced songs range from various studios including Echo Mountain, Asheville, NC, Ace Recording Studio, Austin, TX and Chip Martin Studio in Nashville, TN.
Currently, they are working on music projects with Michael Ashworth of the Steep Canyon Rangers, Trisha Gene Brady of the Black Lillies, Americana artist Shannon Whitworth and Americana artist Aaron Wood.
As far as live performances, Kelley and Laura have toured nationally performing their songs live at various singer songwriter venues, house concerts and singer songwriter showcases including Tootsies, Downtown Hotel Indigo in Nashville, TN, Daisy Dukes, Nashville, TN, the Blue Plate Special on WDVX FM, Knoxville, TN and the Richard Roddy Music Event in Crosby, Texas, sharing the stage with well- known songwriters including Austin Cunningham, Houston Marchman, Leeann Atherton, Leigh Glass, Joshua Singleton and hall of fame songwriter Allen Shamblin.
